Industrial automation research and innovation in the provision of airport equipment, products and services has declined over the past year.
The latest figures show that the number of industrial automation-related patent applications in the industry stood at 47 in the three months to June, compared to 61 in the same period of 2021.
Numbers of issued patents related to industrial automation followed a similar trend to filings – falling from 43 in the three months ending June 2021 to 28 in the same period in 2022.
The figures are compiled by GlobalData, which tracks patent filings and grants from official offices around the world. Using textual analysis, as well as official patent classifications, these patents are grouped into key subject areas and linked to key companies in various industries.

The numbers also provide insight into the biggest innovators in the industry.
Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corp was the leading industrial automation innovator in the airport equipment supply, products and services industry during the past quarter. The US-headquartered company filed 25 industrial automation-related patents in the three months to June. This figure was up from 19 over the same period in 2021.
It was followed by South Korea-based Samsung Heavy Industries Co Ltd with 6 industrial automation patent applications, US-based United Parcel Service Inc (5 applications), and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co Ltd. , based in South Korea (5 requests).
Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corp has recently stepped up its R&D in the area of industrial automation. It recorded 24% growth in related patent applications in the three months ending June compared to the same period in 2021 – the highest percentage growth of any company tracked with more than 10 quarterly patents in the airport equipment supply, products and services sector.
